The meristematic tissues extracts (MTE) are obtained by cold extraction, from young, fresh parts of the plants. The biochemical peculiarity of these undifferentiated tissues, mainly the presence of compounds that determine the cell division, is reflected into their therapeutic effect. The lack of an efficient plant extracts market control lead to the marketing of products with un-proper efficacy and safety. Due by this, the development of simple, efficacy methods to evaluate the efficacy of the MTE will contribute to the enhancing of their quality and subsequently the increase of the quality of life.
This project proposes to develop enzymatic methods, specifically for MTE, in vitro screenings of pharmacological properties. By enzymatic quantification, that will evaluate the antioxidant (SOD radical scavenging activity and xanthine-oxidase methods), anti-inflammatory (anti-proteolitic activity, beta-glucosidase inhibition and protein denaturation assays), anti-ulcer (urease and alfa-chymotrypsine inhibition methods) or anti-neurodegenerative (acetylcholinesterase and tyrosinase inhibition methods) will highlighted new biological properties of the MTE, as also aspects regarding the molecular mechanism of action. Additionally these analyses could be a new quality parameter (QP) to ensure the possibility of MTE efficacy evaluation.
The methods will be applied to the extracts from buds of Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.), Common Alder (Alnus glutionsa L.), Common fig (Ficus carica L.), Walnut (Juglans regia L.) and from young shoots of Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.), all existing into the gemmotherapic products portofolio of the beneficiary.
After the development and validation of these methods will be transferred to beneficiary, being completed the quality specifications of these products with this new QP (enzymatic analysis), and later could be extended to the entire range of products of the beneficiary and that can help to extend of these extracts recommendations.
